Calhoun County Baseball Tournament

Top seeded Saks drops shocker to 8th seeded Piedmont.  Meanwhile Oxford hammers five homeruns erasing an early deficit against a feisty Weaver squad.

Oxford    12

Weaver     3

*For the better part of four innings it appeared the Weaver Bearcats were en route to a monumental upset of Calhoun County’s only 6A ball-club.  Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the 4th, all of that changed quickly.

“I had to get all of them up in the third inning and say ‘hey, now’s the time or it’s going to be the same thing as last year”, said Oxford head coach Wes Brooks, referring to the team’s early exit in the tournament last season.

Cain Hollingsworth blasted a two-run shot in the bottom of the 4th inning, his first of 2 on the night, igniting the Yellow Jackets comeback.

“We have three groups of hitters during practice; situation guys, little guys and big guys.  He’s in the little guy group and I told him [after the game] that we might have to move him up,” Brooks said with a smile.

Trey Pilkington would tie the score later in the same inning with a solo shot of his own.  From that point on, it was all Oxford as they ended the night on a 12-0 run.

On top of the Hollingsworth and Edwards’ bombs, Saxon Butler got into the mix with two homeruns of his own.  For Butler, they represented his 5th and 6th homeruns in the last 12 games.

Tucker Simpson got the win for Oxford after relieving Taylor Sparks in the second inning.  Simpson went six innings giving up just three hits and didn’t allow a run.

Jacksonville         8

White Plains        4

*Jacksonville senior Bradley Christopher went 2-for-3 at the plate and tossed 6 innings on the mound, only giving up three earned runs in the winning effort.  Christopher also drove in two runs.  The Golden Eagles will face off with Oxford in the semi-final round today at 4:30.

Piedmont      1

Saks             0

*The top-seeded Saks Wildcats lost a shocker last night to 8th seeded Piedmont.  In a battle of the unbeaten, Bulldog pitcher Kirk Pope shut down the Wildcats allowing just two infield singles en route to the shutout victory.  In an effort to keep his team perfect on the year, Saks pitcher Dakoda Wells struck out 16 in the loss including a stretch of 9 straight.

Kyle Glover broke the scoreless tie on the first pitch of the seventh inning with a solo shot over the center-field fence.  The homerun was only the second hit all night for Piedmont.  The Bulldogs are the only team that remains perfect in the county with a 4-0 record.

Alexandria           5

Pleasant Valley    4

*Scoring all of their runs in the 4th inning, 3rd seeded Alexandria advanced past Pleasant Valley in a tight one.  Taylor Shanks got the win for the Valley Cubs pitching 6 and 1/3 innings.  Alexandria will take on Piedmont in the semi-final round tonight at 7p.m.
